Nick Cross AARNET
The change of government in Australia in 2007 brought with it sweeping reform agendas with Education, Health and Broadband standing atop all other priorities in building the Australian economy. Courtesy of a GFC, significant additional stimulus funding flowed into the education bucket beyond already well funded education programs under the banner of ‘The Digital Education Revolution’ targeting physical infrastructure, rural and remote connectivity, quality teacher programmes, establishment of a national curriculum, online curriculum tools, copyright frameworks, interoperability and digital architectures.

In the single largest nation building infrastructure project in Australian history, the federally backed NBN Co has been given a mandate to build and operate a new fast National Broadband Network to ensure that all have access to affordable fast broadband. As the nation’s Research and Education network, AARNet has an instrumental role to play in the achievement of these national goals and is the platform upon which a number will be founded.

In this session Nick will review the status of this collective promise of what they have meant to the intended beneficiaries – the teacher and the student in the classroom.

Trevor Hill, Director IT Services, DoE Tas. Trevor has been in this position for 5 years and manages the IT direction, strategy and services for DoE Tas. Prior to this Trevor was IT Manager at TAFE Tasmania and prior to that had 20 years in management positions in other State and Local Government organisations. In addition to the Connected Any Student, Any School (CASAS) project, Trevor has also been managing and coordinating the DoE Tas implementation of the Commonwealth Digital Education Revolution (DER) project and other Commonwealth / State education IT initiatives.

Trevor will speak about the Connected Any Student, Any School (CASAS) project and the opportunities it will offer to Tasmanian students, teachers and the wider community and how it will support other state and national education IT initiatives.
The CASAS project is a Tasmanian state wide multi jurisdiction extension to distance education and e-learning using 21st Century toolsets, systems and services for any student, any school being lead by the DoE with partners in the Catholic Education Office Tasmania and Independent Schools Tasmania.

CASAS is being partly funded by the Commonwealth as part of their Digital Regions Initiative (DRI), which is a Commonwealth program to co-fund digital enablement applications to improve services in the key sectors of health, education and/or emergency services in regional, rural and remote communities across Australia in partnership with state, territory and local governments.
